Summly, a smart young app gets a makeover

Friday, 2 November 2012

There's a fair chance you have heard of Summly, since it's the product of a 17-year-old with Stephen Fry supporting him. In its latest incarnation it offers automated summaries of news boiled down to 400 characters using a computer algorithm. No editors are involved. So far it has an iPhone look, but it is free.

It's no schoolboy product. It looks beautiful. The story behind it is fascinating. Adobe blog also has a good article by John Nack and the Guardian has also featured it, as has Wired. I used an earlier version that summarized a text for you automatically. It didn't quite work, the summaries barely made sense, but I am sorry to see it go.
