Stop iOS6 tracking you

Saturday, 20 October 2012

I didn't realize it till today, but iOS6 is set by default to track you for the benefit of advertisers. A random number is generated once when you install it, apparently. Advertisers can then send messages to the iOS device with that number based on the apps you have run and ads viewed.

You can turn it off, by turning an opt-out on. You need to go to Settings / General / Abouand find Advertising:

In Advertising slide the limit to on.

Fuller details at The Register, which first alerted to this practice.

Apple has its own targeted ad service. You can opt out of this too by going here. Apple warns you that you may still see the same number of ads. They just won't be tailored to you.
